Chocolate is one of the greatest substances on earth. In addition to being sublimely delicious, it bathes your brain in feel-good chemicals. I know none of us needs more reasons to sink our teeth into something decadent, especially during stressful times, but I can’t resist sharing these findings with you. Phenylethylamine may not be the […]
Immerse yourself in art. Visit a gallery or museum and allow the depth and grace of great works to pierce through your pain. Let them remind you of all that is real and beautiful, shocking and intense, poignant and amusing. After all, artists process experiences, expressing them in new ways that reach your heart, mind, […]
All anger comes from demands we make of ourself or others. Think back to the last time you were irate. Was it because something didn’t go your way? Did someone behave badly towards you? Did you do something you thought you shouldn’t? Perhaps, some injustice occurred on a national level. In each situation your demanding […]
In yoga, it is common to practice “heart-opening poses.” These are often backbends that open the heart chakra (there are seven chakras, or energy centers, running up the spine). You might think, “My heart is hurting enough, thank you very much. Why would I want to open it up more?” Not for pain, but […]
I know you’re wondering, “What does a bladder infection have to do with divorce?” But you’d be surprised. Many women get UTIs (urinary tract infections) when they’re in the throes of separation and divorce. We are a society of addicts. Alcohol, drugs, gambling, shopping, TV, food, iPhones, music, pornography, exercise…you name it and we can find a way to abuse it. Why the rampant epidemic of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)? To dull our pain. All addictions achieve the same goal: they push those things we find threatening out of our […]
I created a simple tool that helps people avoid conflict and enjoy more harmonious relationships. I call it “Scripting” because you actually ask the other person to say exactly what you want to hear in a given situation. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to employ this technique all the time, but it is an excellent remedy […]
Grief is the most protean of emotions, constantly shifting from one feeling to another. One minute you’re depressed, the next you’re angry. Later you find yourself bargaining with life, and then you’re in the ozone of denial. Acceptance comes, but only after you’ve faced your demons. The thing to remember about grief is […]
We all know how important it is to eat high quality, preferably local/organic food, but it is equally helpful to eat frequently. By eating at regularly spaced intervals (ideally every 3-4 hours) you maintain a fairly even blood sugar level, which helps balance your mood. If you let yourself skip meals your blood sugar level […]
Guilt is actually worse than useless, as it fosters bad feelings towards yourself and others. It’s easy to think that guilt motivates you to do better in the future, but that’s not actually what happens. Guilt leads to resentment of the person you might have wronged. Here’s how it works: if they didn’t exist you […]
