Grace

By Nicole Urdang | October 20, 2008
Posted in Personal evolution

“The growth of grace is like the polishing of metals. There is first an opaque surface; by and by you see a spark darting out, then a strong light; ’till at length it sends back a perfect image of the sun that shines upon it.” Edward Payson (1783-1827) “We’re all stumbling towards the light with […]

Triggers

By Nicole Urdang | October 19, 2008
Posted in Trauma

You can’t avoid triggers.  They’re everywhere.  The longer you were coupled, the more you have.  Some days, it might seem as if everything is a trigger.  If you were together for decades, that’s likely.  You literally shared millions of moments.  Deepak Chopra used to say that couples shared sub-atomic particles by being so physically […]

Self-Pity Can Actually Help you Feel Better, Sometimes.

By Nicole Urdang | October 15, 2008
Posted in Self-compassion

The Buddha taught there is no one more deserving of compassion than you.  More recently, acupuncturist Barbara Sullivan said, “Self-pity is like self-comfort.”  Not only can it be OK, it may be beneficial. Self-pity has gotten a bad rap. There are times when feeling sorry for yourself opens the floodgates and lets all your sadness […]

Freedom

By Nicole Urdang | October 13, 2008
Posted in Divorce

After the slaves were freed many chose to stay on with their “masters” because they didn’t know any other way of being in the world.  Dependent for so long, they were afraid of starving if left to their own devices; but, the majority bravely went forth, conquering their fears and forging new lives.   […]

Sex With Your Soon-To-Be-Ex

By Nicole Urdang | October 13, 2008
Posted in Divorce, Sex

Only you can gauge if sex with your soon-to-be-ex is a good idea. In the short term it may feel wonderful; after all, you may have enjoyed a happy sexual relationship. It’s natural to want some physical affection and attention during this draught, and divorce is fodder for insecurities. What better way to quell those […]

Phantom Marriage Syndrome: Lingering Effects of Divorce

By Nicole Urdang | October 13, 2008
Posted in Divorce, Relationships

Love’s not a faucet you can turn off because suddenly the water is polluted.  Intellectually, especially after betrayal,  you may seek a separation or divorce; but, emotionally, you’re still connected.  It’s like phantom limb syndrome.  The leg was gangrenous, but it’s hard to see it go.  Then, for months or years, you have phantom limb […]

Chocolate’s Healing Powers

By Nicole Urdang | October 12, 2008
Posted in Holistic tools, Life enhancers

Chocolate is one of the greatest substances on earth.  In addition to being sublimely delicious, it bathes your brain in feel-good chemicals.  I know none of us needs more reasons to sink our teeth into something decadent, especially during stressful times, but I can’t resist sharing these findings with you. Phenylethylamine may not be the […]

Seeing Beautiful Art Can Quickly Lower Your Pain

By Nicole Urdang | October 11, 2008
Posted in Stress

Immerse yourself in art.  Visit a gallery or museum and allow the depth and grace of great works to pierce through your pain.  Let them remind you of all that is real and beautiful, shocking and intense, poignant and amusing.  After all, artists process experiences, expressing them in new ways that reach your heart, mind, […]

Anger, Aggression, Passivity, and Passive-Aggressiveness

By Nicole Urdang | October 10, 2008
Posted in Anger, Relationships

All anger comes from demands we make of ourself or others.  Think back to the last time you were irate.  Was it because something didn’t go your way?  Did someone behave badly towards you?  Did you do something you thought you shouldn’t?  Perhaps, some injustice occurred on a national level.  In each situation your demanding […]

Open Your Heart

By Nicole Urdang | October 7, 2008
Posted in Inner work, Relationships

In yoga, it is common to practice “heart-opening poses.”  These are often backbends that open the heart chakra (there are seven chakras, or energy centers, running up the spine). You might think, “My heart is hurting enough, thank you very much. Why would I want to open it up more?” Not for pain, but […]
